Why Traditional Contact Lenses Don’t Work for Some Patients

Many people assume that if soft contact lenses don’t work for them, then contact lenses simply aren’t an option.

In reality, some eyes require specialized lens designs.

Traditional soft lenses work best when the cornea has a relatively regular shape. However, certain eye conditions cause the cornea to become irregular.

Examples include:

• corneal trauma

When the cornea has an irregular shape, soft lenses may not provide clear vision.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Specialty lenses such as scleral lenses can create a new smooth optical surface that improves vision.

This means that many patients who struggled with traditional contact lenses can still achieve excellent vision with the right specialty lens design.

Northern optics is the only clinic in Northern Ontario that provides state of the art, corneal topography guided Scleral contact lens fittings.
