Are Scleral Lenses Comfortable?

Many patients assume that because scleral lenses are larger than traditional contact lenses, they must be uncomfortable.
In fact, many people find them surprisingly comfortable.
Why They Often Feel Comfortable
Scleral lenses rest on the sclera, which is much less sensitive than the cornea.
This means the lenses often cause less irritation than smaller rigid lenses.
Hydration for the Eye
The fluid layer under the lens also helps keep the cornea hydrated throughout the day.
This can be particularly helpful for patients with dry eye symptoms.
With proper fitting and training, most patients adapt very well to scleral lenses and are able to wear them comfortably for many hours each day.
Northern optics is the only clinic in Northern Ontario that provides state of the art, corneal topography guided Scleral contact lens fittings.
